Core features › Variables

Variables

Store, import, export and roll back environment variables.

Add a variable

  1. Open an environment and choose New Variable.
  2. Enter the key, such as DATABASE_URL, and its value.
  3. Mark it as secret if the value is sensitive, and save it.

Secret values

Secret values are masked in the dashboard. People who can edit the environment can reveal and copy them there. Anyone who can read the environment can still download them with the CLI, so give read access only to people who should have the values.

Import from JSON

Choose Import JSON, then paste or drop a JSON object. Each key becomes a variable.

variables.json
{
  "DATABASE_URL": "postgresql://user:pass@localhost:5432/app",
  "REDIS_URL": "redis://localhost:6379",
  "LOG_LEVEL": "info"
}

Export

Use Export to download the variables you have access to as a JSON or .env file.

Version history

Every change creates a version. Smart Vault keeps the three most recent previous versions of each variable; open Version History to compare them or roll back.
